Headboards have played an important role in beds since ancient times. As an example, the Greeks, in addition to sleeping in their beds, also ate and socialized in them, so that the headboard played the role of backrest. Already in the Renaissance, the bed was the main piece of furniture in homes and a place for interaction with visitors. Another use for the headboard in the past was to protect the bed from drafts on cold nights. In the Middle Ages, the bed became a decorative piece in homes, with sculptures, canopies or elaborate tapestries, accompanied by carved headboards and architectural panels.
For the architect and urban planner Geovana Gerona Parra, the head of the bed, in addition to beautifying the environment and making it more cozy, has the functionality to protect the wall from dirt, scratches and also to shelter the bed from the cold. “In the case of box beds, they are also useful for fixing the bed in a position, and delimiting the spaces”, emphasizes the professional.
As an alternative to the traditional headboard, Giovanna informs that many architects and designers have chosen not to use headboards on beds, preferring, for example, wallpaper for space demarcation, plaster details, or even adhesives. “It’s a way to innovate, especially when we find customers who are more open to new things, in addition to being more economical compared to traditional headboards”, he explains.

How to choose the ideal headboard
Architect Giovanna clarifies that the ideal headboard should match the decor of your bedroom. As an example, the professional cites the iron headboards that combine with more romantic or more rustic rooms. The ones made of wood, on the other hand, give a cozier air, while the upholstered ones are great for people who like to read or use a notebook before bed.
“The sizes are varied, if you choose to buy a ready-made headboard, the ideal is that it should be between 1.10 and 1.30m in height, and the width according to your mattress. However, if you are going to do something more personalized, I suggest you take advantage of it and use it as a form of decoration. In small bedrooms, it can be incorporated into superior furniture in order to increase closet space, use mirrors to expand the environment, and even use wallpaper that has already been used in the bedroom or that matches some print already employee”, guides the architect.
How to modify your headboard
If you already have your bed with a headboard or you already have a headboard and now is not the time to change it, you can use your creativity to make it as good as new! The architect gave the following tips to make your headboard even more beautiful: “You can paint with strong colors, as it is a contemporary trend. Combine solid colors such as white, black, red, yellow, blue, with other furniture in a woody finish. Or, if your headboard is padded, change the fabric that covers it, according to your style. It can be in patchwork, giving a more cheerful air which you can make yourself, linen fabrics, which suggest a more formal atmosphere, or synthetic leather that also brings a feeling of comfort and warmth on cold days”, advises Giovanna.
