The first record of a vertical garden in history dates back to 450 BC. King Nebuchadnezzar presented his wife, Queen Amities, with an artificial mountain covered with gardens. Although this work receives the name of hanging garden, in fact the vegetation was cultivated in superimposed terraces, which were erected on hollow pillars in the shape of cubes and, later, filled with earth.

According to landscape architect Alessandra de Carvalho, responsible for Le Jordin Arquitetura Paisagística , in Brazil, the presence of vertical gardens began in 1983, with landscape designer Burle Marx, but the great explosion of this technique as a landscaping item occurred around 10 years with “the strengthening of green awareness and the incredible ideas and countless applications of this type of garden in the areas of architecture and ambiance”.

Among the advantages of opting for this style of garden, the professional highlights, on a small scale, the visual isolation between indoor and outdoor environments provided by it, the integration of green in places not conducive to a garden on the ground, the high aesthetic value of the environments . The vertical garden does not take up considerable space either, it helps to reduce stress and mental fatigue and produces positive psychological effects, such as satisfaction, well-being and tranquility.

The landscaper highlights as one of the biggest disadvantages when choosing this type of garden the economy in the choice of mounting materials. “Opting for a good structure may not be very economical, but it will certainly bring you a good cost-benefit ratio, in addition to avoiding future problems”, he points out.

Which species are most and least suitable

According to Alessandra, for the implementation of a vertical garden to be successful, it is essential to evaluate the location, taking into account the lighting and climate, which are determining factors for choosing the ideal plants to be cultivated. “In full sun environment, among the species that are best adapted to this location, it is possible to mention feather asparagus ( Asparagus densiflorus ), serpent beard ( Ophiopogon jaburan ), brilliantine ( Pilea microphylla ), the collar of -pearls ( Senecio rowleyanus ), chlorophyte ( Chlorophytum comosum ), left-handed flower ( Scaevola aemula ), coral flower ( Russelia equisetiformis ), English ivy ( Hedera helix), the boa constrictor ( Epipremnum pinnatum ), the purple lambari ( Tradescantia zebrina ), the grapete orchid ( Spathoglottis unguiculat a ), the liriope ( Liriope spicata ), the tilandsia ( Tillandsia sp ) and the purple trapoeraba ( Tradescantia pallida ) )”, indicates the architect.

For semi-shade environments or for growing indoors, the landscaper highlights anthurium ( Anthurium andraeanum ), asplenium ( Asplenium nidus ), aloe vera ( Philodendron martianum ), and bush beard ( Ophiopogon jaburan ), bromeliad ( Guzmania sp ), columee goldfish ( Nematanthus wettsteinii ), deer antler ( Platycerium bifurcatum ), golden rain ( Oncidium sp ), girl’s finger ( Sedum morganianum ), the money-in-the-bunch ( Callisia repens ), the falenopsis ( Phalaenopsis x hybridus ), the lipstick flower ( Aeschynanthus radicans), the may flower ( Schlumbergera truncata ), the peperômia ( Peperômia scandens ), the cattail ( Acalypha reptans ), the ripsalis ( Rhipsalis bacifera ), the Portuguese lace ( Davalia fejeensis ), the fern  ( Nephrolepis exaltata ), syngonion ( Syngonium angustatum ) and vriesia ( Vriesea sp ).

As for species restrictions, the professional states that it is possible to cultivate virtually any species of plants and even trees in vertical gardens, as long as the roots have space to develop in the support used – the piece must support the total weight of the plant with the damp earth. “However, it is advisable to avoid poisonous species and flowers that have a strong smell”, he explains.

The importance of structure

According to the professional, there are several options for structures for residential projects, depending on the size and budget available for installation. Check out below some of the most used structures for the elaboration of a vertical garden, according to the architect:

– Precast blocks: found in cast or tamped concrete versions, this type of structure can be installed on waterproofed walls or remain unsupported, as the blocks offer niches that help in its structure.

– Ceramic blocks: this type of block requires waterproofing and painting, in addition to the use of mortar at the time of installation.

– Modular plastic structure: can be found as an individual option or in kits, always in specialized gardening stores. Its advantage is that it can be installed on the most varied types of surfaces, allowing you to create differentiated gardens.

– Trusses and vases: with the possibility of being purchased in different models and types of materials, they are easy to assemble, allowing for a personalized and authorial project.

How to set up a vertical garden

Among the professional’s favorite structures, Alessandra highlights the versatility of ceramic vases and modular plates. “A tip for those who want to set up their own garden is to visit a specialized store and choose the materials they most identify with. A great example is the coconut slabs already with vases, which can be installed on branches or wire mesh, avoiding damage to the wall”, teaches the architect. Finally, just choose one of the plants that you like best, according to the conditions of the environment and start growing it.

Among the basic care indicated by the landscaper, it is worth highlighting the importance of irrigation, which should be done according to the need of each species, giving preference to natural fertilization, such as earthworm humus, for example, since the garden will be very close to the physical contact of the residents, avoiding the use of chemical products.
